The Unimog celebrates its 60th anniversary jubilee and it was a great honor to build the first time a replica in Technic bricks. The Unimog is one ultimate vehicle for off-road use and common for all is its 4x4 drive with high ground clearance with big tires and great axle articulation combined with a powerful diesel motor. Designed to take a large number of different implements the Unimog can easily used as a front loader, backhoe, snowplow, dumper or argricultural tractor.
The Unimog story starts back in the mid forties of last century, when Albert Friedrich made the first drafts of an agricultural vehicle. In 1950 Daimler-Benz took over the project, and started the production of the Unimog in Gaggenau plant, where it was build until 2002, when the production moved to Wörth am Rhein plant, near Karlsruhe.
During the 60 years a lot of different versions of the Unimog were built. The first Unimog versions were simple off road vehicles, with open cabs and straight lines easy to produce out of sheet metal, but underneath the already had the technologies all-wheel drive, torque tubes still driving the modern Unimog .
The Unimog S was introduced in 1955 and was built in many different versions until 1980 and it became the bestseller in Unimog history. Characteristic was its round tilted bonnet for good view and the grill with the Mercedes star and the two big round lights. It was highly popular among armed forces and later among civilian users, particularly among globetrotters and members of exhibitions.
In 1963 Daimler-Benz introduced the larger Unimog U406 series and 1972 the Daimler-Benz resumed the idea of an agricultural vehicle and presented the MB-Trac. A tractor based on the Unimog with four equal big tires a long narrow bonnet and a closed driver’s cab base between the wheels.
In 1992, the light-duty and medium-duty models were upgraded. The trucks received a more spacious, fold-up cabin, with a flat sloping hood. Almost all models have the asymmetrical hood. It was shifted to the right for better visibility of the road. Only a few trucks received with full width bonnet.
With the Unimog 425 Daimler-Benz added in 1975, a new heavy-duty top model, characteristic was new angular cab with large bonnet and the black radiator grill. This cab design has changed in 25 years and it is still a common view on the roads.
In 2002 the now called U 1000 and U2000 series was upgraded to the U3000/U4000and U5000 series. There were no major changes to the exterior design of the truck. One of the external features is the hood with a new grill, with wide ventilation slots.

In 2000 the Unimog U 300, U 400, and U 500 were introduced for tailored for municipal work, it was also called “implement carrier”. It replaced all the previous medium and heavy duty series. With this model replacement, the Unimog received more advanced technologies in one go than ever before. A new feature was the highly advanced and practical cap made of fiber composites. The huge windscreen extends far down, permitting a perfect view of all connections and implements. The all new cab has a feature called VarioPilot, the drives workplace, complete with steering wheel, gauges and pedals can be moved from the to the right-hand side and back in next to no time, which is extremely practical for municipal work.

The Unimog U20 was introduced in 2007 as a light weight addition to the Unimog family. It is tailored to meet the need of municipal work usually done by a tractor, with the benefits of an all wheel drive truck and all the features of a real Unimog.
